Blog: 10 Reasons Why You Should Start Pole or Aerial Classes
1. It’s a fun bucket list item!
One main reason women take up classes is because they are fun, and different, they are bored at the ‘same old gym’. Where else can you dance to Beyoncé or Lady Gaga in heels, besides on a Saturday night in the club? A pole or aerial fitness class will send you out of your comfort zone, to make you nervously laugh, smile but make you feel like a queen all at the same time.
2. Increase your fitness!
Without even realising you will become stronger, leaner, more flexible and have better endurance. When you enroll in a progressive 8-week course, you will be taught a thorough syllabus, which involves tricks and combinations on the pole, lyra or silks, moving you from beginners to elite. If you’re a driven human, you will naturally want to achieve and tick off each trick, motivating yourself to pass into the next level and reaching the ultimate level of Elite. This determination will get your body fit! A course will usually consist of a warm-up, strengthening, tricks, dance (cardio) and a stretch cool down – all the elements for an all over body workout.
3. Expand your social life group by a gazillion!
Like any new place of interest, you will meet people, the same people whom you will see on a weekly basis. However, the people you meet at a pole or aerial fitness studio is a little different! Everyone who attends class is extremely supportive, they encourage you to be the best you can be and always bring out the best in yourself. It’s a strange & unique feeling! The type of human that a pole or aerial fitness studio attracts are very much alike, people who have an open mind, willing to give anything a go and want the best for everyone in the room; because the same feelings of being vulnerable & nervous are also shared between fellow classmates. With that being said, strong friendships are made, and your social life calendar will increase!
4. Find a sense of belonging!
Once you have bonded with your instructors & fellow classmates, participated in some social studio events and finally get the hang of class, you will find that the studio is comforting. You now have a place where you belong, and you have a hobby that you love! Most students who join a pole or aerial studio are either looking for a new hobby, a fun way to keep fit or a distraction from a break-up or disappointing home/social life – they find that the studio becomes their new place of comfort. You become a part of the strong studio sisterhood, where you can embrace and express who you are in a safe and welcoming community.
5. Feel accomplished!
Enrolling into a pole or aerial course is like going to school. You will learn and progress in each level, feeling a sense of achievement every time you “nail” a trick or combo that is graded. The goals are never ending! Once you are feeling confident with dance and tricks, your mind may dapple in the pole and aerial competition scene, which is a whole other world!
6. Live a healthier lifestyle!
Lifting your own body weight on an apparatus naturally makes you feel like you should be eating healthy options, so that your body is fueled by the right foods and nutrients. You will find that your diet will change so that you are giving your body enough fuel to cater for the energy needed to take classes regularly. Your water in-take will also increase, staying hydrated throughout class is essential.
7. Increase your happiness!
Eating healthy and taking care of your mind, body and soul will make you one happy little vegemite. You will be feeling on top of the world!
8. An exciting “thing” to look back on!
No doubt when you’re a retiree, sipping a cup of tea with your fellow retirees, you will be showing off photos from the time you did pole, lyra or silks classes.
9. You’re doing something for yourself!
When you need an escape from life, coming into the studio is the best therapy and you’re doing it all for you boo! You forget about the life you live for just an hour and you focus on your own physical and mental health.
10. Boost your confidence!
Stepping outside of your comfort zone will automatically make you feel nervous, anxious but also very excited and willing to try something new. A pole or aerial fitness class will test your limits, challenging your brain (and body) to overcome numerous ‘first time’ fears, boosting your confidence levels each week!
If you've always wanted to try pole or aerial classes, it's never too late, or you're never "not strong enough" to start, give it a go, you will be very surprised!
