Blog: 5 Excuses People Make to NOT start classes
- “Ohhhh, but I’m not fit enough to do that!”
This is one of the biggest excuses people say about classes. One of the main reasons people join our studios is to get fit, they want to exercise, but want to have fun at the same time. We don’t expect any one to have any dance or fitness experience when they sign up, beginner classes are structured to accommodate students with zero levels of fitness. Like joining a gym, you are there to live a healthier lifestyle and increase your fitness.
- Fearing that you are too far out of your comfort zone!
I once read a quote on Instagram that really changed my perspective on being outside of my own comfort zone, and that was, “You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone - Roy T. Bennett”. If you know you need to make a change in your life, because you’re feeling unhappy, then the only way to change this is outside of your comfort zone. It’s that simple! Whether you need to chat to someone about a “sticky” situation or start a new form of fitness, all by yourself, then these experiences will help you grow and get you out of your ‘unhappy funk’. Scary but true! #youcandoit
- “I don’t have the time or have that kind of money!”
We know that money is the first deciding factor for any new student who walks through the door, therefore many fitness or dance studios offer an introductory pass, so people can ‘try before they buy’. If you really want to make a change in your life, because you are determined to get out of your “funk”, then you will MAKE the time and spend the money on an activity that you’re enjoying and getting results from, mentally and physically. Start with that introductory offer, you never know until you give it go, and then decide if that’s the right hobby for you.
- “I’m too scared the other girls in the class are going to laugh and look at me”
This is still a thought in people’s minds, even those that are in our highest levels. Yes, surprising! When you’re in class, the ‘struggle is real’ to not compare yourself to the person next to you. But you must remember that no one else is looking at anyone else but themselves. You are your own critic, and most likely the women next to you will encourage and support you to do your best. Everyone is in the same boat, they are nervous, but are there to try their very best and give everything a go, so there is nothing to be embarrassed or shy about!
- “I’m too old to start classes”
Straight up, isn’t age just number? You are as old as you feel. This is a true statement! You are never too old to start any kind of hobby, including pole, lyra or silks dance classes. Yes, they are quite challenging, but you must listen to your body and go at your own pace. The turtle wins the race, right? There’s no hurry, take the time to grow and learn in class, you will be surprised at what your body is capable at doing. Believe it or not, there are pole dance competitions that have a Masters category and some of the best Australian pole dancers are 50+, some of the students that attend studios are 50+, so this is a very common “age” to start taking classes.
So, you heard it here first, you have no excuse to start! Turn those excuses into “why nots”, write a list of pros and cons, and really evaluate what’s holding you back. I personally believe in the Gen-Y term of “YOLO – you only live once”, I have it tattooed on my ribs I believe in it so much, because it’s true. We are not on this earth forever, so step outside of your comfort zone to try something new, for yourself! Your own happiness should be your priority, before anything else! Xx
