"I've found the most fun way to get fit and strong" - by Liz
Before I start to tell you about how my pole journey, there is something you need to know about me. I am lazy. Especially when it comes to exercise. And I always try to find a short cut to anything. This included getting fit. When I was younger, I'd think "oh my god, I NEED to look skinny for [insert event here]. But of course, as we know, there is no shortcut. I learnt this the hard way one day when i REALLY wanted to look skinny, but couldn't click my fingers and make my wish come true. I began to try everything to get 'skinny'. I tried netball, yoga, running, indoor and outdoor training. And some I thought was OK, others I completely hated. I didn't think being skinny was worth all the effort.
In 2015, I came across the two words - pole dancing. I always thought and assumed it was "too sexy" for me. With extremely traditional parents, I thought "I could never". But my roommate at the time, and I, really wanted to give it a go. My roommate kept putting it off, but one day, I booked myself into a trial class and immediately fell in love. I was surprised with how strong I was and what my body was capable of. I was addicted to collecting bruises (which we call pole kisses) from the tricks we learnt, and I fell in love with the amazing people in the pole community.
Within a few short weeks, I realised it wasn't ever about looking skinny. It was about getting fit. I found I was having fun and the progression of slowly building my strength. Divas has built my endurance and it never ceases to amaze me the heights of fitness levels women within the community have. The fact every dancer started learning how to climb to watching them do flips and tricks on the pole is inspirational. Because of Pole Dancing, I feel I've cheated in life. I've found the most fun way to get fit and strong.
